Tuesday Tech Talk #27

Hello everybody and I hope you all had a wonderful Happy New Year! I spent mine watching a Rocky marathon 1-5 and then Rocky Balboa all on Blu-ray, on of my new Christmas gifts this year. So lets get down to what is happening this week in tech.

Apple Event to be on the 27th, not 26th

Ok so the big speculation is this will be the event where the much talked about Apple Tablet, iSlate, iGuide, etc will be announced. Last week it look as if it was on the 26th but now it looks more like the 27th. I can wait 24 extra hours I guess considering it won’t start shipping until March.

Apple acquires Quattro Wireless

Quattro is a mobile advertiser, a competitor to AdMob which was acquired by Google recently. The Apple vs Google showdown continues. It’s like Apple just beat BlackBerry like Rocky beat Apollo and now Google is Clubber Lang. Guess this makes Microsoft Ivan Drago.

iPhone remote to your TV?

So if your like me and you have your iPhone next to you but not the remote, then there may soon be an app for that too. This looks very interesting and if is compatible with my DirecTV receiver, LG TV, and audio receiver, then I would seriously consider getting this.

The era of 3-D HD may be approaching soon. Yeah I know, I just got a new HDTV myself that won’t support 3D but this is the chance we take as tech geeks. Even hearing now that ESPN will be broadcasting in 3-D later this year.

How about some long overdue iPhone/iPod touch app reviews?

This Week’s iPhone/iPod touch apps

Redbox - This handy application is great if you are out and about and want pick up a movie but not have to browse the machine outside in the cold weather. Simply choose the Redbox location within the app, browse it’s library and select your movies for pickup. Remember to bring your Debit or Credit card with you that you use on the Redbox website to pick up your movie(s). We tried it on Saturday when my wife and I were eating at Fairpark Grill and I rented Year One and picked it up at Walgreens. Word of note Redbox does not offer Blu-ray yet so you may want to hold on to that Netflix account for now.

TextNow - Yeah yeah I know what your going to say, “I have an iPhone why would I need a texting app?” Well as the case with me, I had a sister-in-law and her 3 children that got iPod touch’s which of course would require such an app. Simply install the app, sign up for a username like in an IM and text away. If you text a lot they also offer an unlimited texting app for 99 cents.

Speedtest - Ever hangout somewhere and wonder how fast the broadband is? Well there is an application just for that. You can measure WiFi, 3G, or EDGE. I first started using this app when Tupelo got 3G and was measuring how fast it was in my area.

IMDb - Yes the much popular movie and TV information site has their own app and it works like you would expect a mobile version of IMDb should. It is a great app and was using it a lot to read about trivia for each of the Rocky movies while watching them. Did you know that Dolph Lundgren actually hit Stallone so hard in a boxing scene in Rocky IV, it bruised and swelled his heart and he had to be hospitalized?

Dragon Dictation - From the makers of Dragon Naturally Speaking comes the iPhone app for dictating words to text and then being able to copy and paste them. Course I have found it does not get my words right at times. This means either I am a bad talker or the app which is free has some short comings to work out, I suspect the latter. But try it out, it’s funny to see what it thinks you said. They also have a Search app as well for free.
