Hello folks and welcome to another edition of Tuesday Tech Talk. Quite a few diverse topics this week so lets see what is happening.
HP buys Palm, kills the Slate?
This is interesting, on the same week that HP bought Palm they are apparently deserting plans for the Windows 7-based HP Slate. My theory, why would HP need Windows 7 on a tablet device when they now own a mobile OS company? This reminds me when Apple bought Steve Jobs’ NeXT company which we all know became OS X on the Mac. I don’t think the HP Slate is dead, I just think the Windows part of the Slate is dead. Kudos to HP for picking up Palm, could be a wise move on their part here.
Kraft Foods BYOC policy
Kraft Foods is apparently putting in a new policy allowing its employees to buy whatever computer they desire to use at work and will help out with the purchase providing the employees do their own tech support. Basically if your a Kraft employee but are a Mac or Linux person, then you are in luck! Now if only my employer had a similar policy.
The Apple vs. Adobe War Intensifies
It’s becoming a real billionaire he said/he said thing here. I see some truth on both sides here. Weighing on the matter is Microsoft’s Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager of Internet Explorer and his blog post on Microsoft siding with Apple on HTML5 based video content.

Fourth Generation iPhone released for Sale during WWDC?
Interesting article here from Mashable speculating that the new iPhone may go on sale during the WWDC. Pure speculation at this point and I still think a late June release is still more likely.

This Week’s iPhone/iPod touch/iPad apps
AccuWeather (Free) - This is a very cool app. I just downloaded it and will do a side by side comparison to the Weather Channel app. Sadly AccuWeather has not produced an iPad app yet while the Weather Channel has.
uStream Live Broadcaster (Free) - This can be a cool app, but it has one key flaw. Whenever you are broadcasting, if you get a SMS text or an alert from another app, it ceases to broadcast. Otherwise it is very nice to use, you can even setup an instant poll.

Tuesday Tech Talk #41
Hello folks and welcome to another edition of Triple T. We had another big announcement from Apple last week regarding the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad so lets get right down to it.
iPhone OS 4.0
Thursday Apple showed off the iPhone 4.0 software for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. The new OS will allow multitasking at last so now you can listen to Pandora while checking your Facebook.
Also in the update is Folders which will allow you to group your apps into an icon on a screen which when selected will open up the apps within that folder to select from. This will save me a lot of finger swiping and I am very happy to see it as well.
If you have multiple email accounts it will also offer a unified inbox meaning you will no longer have to switch between inboxes to read your email although you can still do that if you desire to. Also it will now organize email messages by thread as well. For the enterprise folks, it will also allow multiple Exchange accounts too.
Another added edition is they are bring iBooks to the iPhone and iPod touch. It will allow you to read a book across an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and will keep track of where you left off even if you were reading it on another device. Similar to Amazon’s WhisperSync on its Kindle device and apps.
Rate on Delete
Also as part of the iPhone 4.0, the option to rate an app when deleting it is being removed. This is a great thing because if you keep an app you really aren’t given an option to rate it but if you delete one chances are you are not a fan of the app which can skew results in the negative.
Griffin Goodies for the iPad
I am a big fan of Griffin Technologies! They are always thinking of cool stuff for tech products and when it comes to the iPad, they did not disappoint. They are offering their own dock as opposed to the one you can buy from Apple, as well as a PowerBlock and a car charger if you are traveling around with the iPad. They also have a nice professional looking case for the iPad as well and a few other types of cases and sleeves.
Apple vs Adobe
One of the controversial aspects of the iPhone OS 4.0 SDK is the prohibition of using Adobe Flash in apps. To me I agree with Apple, Flash tends to be buggy and processor intensive where as HTML5 is a lot better on video content on mobile devices.
Well that is going to do it for this weeks Triple T. Next week I hope to have some app reviews on both the iPhone and iPod touch and the iPad (even though I don’t have an iPad...yet! See you next week!

Tuesday Tech Talk #39
Hello all and welcome to another edition of Triple T. Quite a bit to cover so lets see what is going on this week.
BusyCal
So I recently went ahead and pulled the trigger on buying a license on BusyCal. What BusyCal does it allows you to share calendars across multiple computers and it will also sync with your Google Calendar. Any change you make to BusyCal syncs to Google and vice versa. Plus my iPhone also syncs to to Google for the calendar so any changes there are also made across the line. A single license is $49 and a Family Pack is $79 (5 computers). It’s what iCal should be. You can also download a free 30 day trial to get a good sense of what it can do.
New iPhone not for AT&T
Interesting article from the Wall Street Journal on Apple working on a new iPhone that is CDMA capable. This could mean Apple maybe striking a deal with Verizon and/or Sprint/Nextel and thus ending an exclusivity deal with AT&T. The article also mentions Apple is working on a updated GSM based iPhone which is what AT&T is based on.
Jobs and Schmidt have a coffee together
Ok so its not Reagan meets Gorbachev in terms of world importance but Steve Jobs and Eric Schmidt of Google recently sat down for a coffee. Maybe they can talk through their competitive issues and learn to cooperate with each other on some cool stuff for people like me that think both companies make great products.
Nota on the iPad
So you want to play Procol Harum’s, “A White Shade of Pale” on your iPad? Well there is an app for that with Nota coming out with one. Also of note screenshots of iPad app store have started leaking out.
Project Gutenberg free ebooks on iPad bookstore
Yep up to 30,000 free titles to download to the iPad. This is pretty cool as there are quite a few great classic titles there.
AT&T 3G MicroCell in your house
So have spotty cell phone reception in your house? Well if you live in a AT&T 3G area you can spring up $150 to improve the service with a MicroCell device that connects to your broadband internet connection. It should roll out in mid-April.
Google defies China by routing through Hong Kong
I love how Google has thumbed its nose at China over the censorship. Instead of shutting down their service there, they have instead routed their traffic through Hong Kong. They even have established a Twitter feed to get around the digital great wall
CBS planning HTML5 videos for iPad
This is pretty cool. Anything that brings forth the death of Flash faster is a great thing.
Creative Suite 5 unveiled on 4/12
Speaking of Adobe, the company announced its latest CS upgrade will be unveiled on April 12th along with the first ever Photoshop in 64-bit form.

Whrrl 3 (Free)- I have been using Whrrl for a while now. Basically it allows you to photo blog an event with a combination of photos from your iPhone and camera and allows you to mix in text slides before and after photos too. Now they are taking on FourSquare and Brightkite in terms of checking in at locations you are at. Unlike FourSquare there are no points are mayoral bragging rights after a certain number of check-ins at a certain place.
MacJournal ($4.99)- I use MacJournal to write this blog as a matter of fact and now they have a iPhone version to compose your personal journal and thoughts. It does allow you to post to your blog from it, but it lacks key features such as attaching links, photos, and category and tagging. For that I will use WordPress when I need to blog from the iPhone which is rare.
MLB At Bat 2010 ($14.99)- Ok it’s back for the baseball fan on the go, MLB At Bat 2010. It will set you back $15 for the app but so worth it.
Yelp (Free) - So visiting a town and want to find a restaurant or just about anything else for that matter? Well Yelp is there for you and you can even help by giving reviews and submitting them to Yelp for other users to read.
Southwest Airlines (Free) - I love flying SWA when I have to go somewhere, so much so I will even drive to Nashville just to fly out on them. This is what an airline app should look like! Make air and car reservations, flight check in and flight status and flight schedules. Bravo SWA, this is why I luv you guys!

Tuesday Tech Talk #31
Hello folks and welcome to another edition of Tuesday Tech Talk. We are 6 days removed from the iPad announcement so this will be like a post game wrap up type post.
More Thoughts on iPad
The more I see what this device can do, the more I want one. Quite simply it’s form factor and long battery life, makes it easier to use at a coffee shop. How many times do you walk into a coffee shop and all the available outlets are taken to plug in your laptop? With the iPad and a blogging app (I presume MacJournal will be making one for it.), you can just sit around anywhere and just type away on a very light device.
Another advantage of it is if I find something I want to show someone that is in another room, I don’t have to pick up the whole laptop and carry it with me to where they are. The 9.7“ screen makes it nice to share photos with someone among other things. If I were to get one I would go for the 16GB model. It is not something I am going to throw my entire music collection on. It’s nice that you can play music on it, but I don’t view it as an iPod or iPhone in that regard. What I would have on it is my photo library, eBooks, and documents using iWork.
iPad in the Enterprise
As I kind of speculated last week, there are some possibilities for using the iPad in the Enterprise. I look forward to seeing how creative companies get in utilizing it in business.
Docs, Books, and Music
Jobs stated that Pages will open Word docs, have book prices the same as Kindle, and have 6 days of continuous music play back. Interesting tidbit, Amazon recently gave in to Macmillan publishers on pricing. So the iPad is already showing signs of being a game changer in the eBook market. I guess this is Apple’s payback to Amazon when Amazon entered the digital music market with competitive pricing. Now if Apple can get McGraw Hill on board for text books and iPad sales in the education area would skyrocket!
Southwest Airlines adding WiFi to entire fleet
With the help of a small company known as Row 44, SWA will be adding WiFi to it’s entire fleet by 2012. Southwest btw is my favorite airline and yes, I will pay to use WiFi because I just can’t sit still for 2-4 hours and not do anything and neither can you I bet?

Love how Steve Jobs took the bull by the horns here. He is right, Flash is dead and HTML5 is the future. I’m sure Scott Bilik may have something to add about this, uh oh did I just call out Scott? ☺
