Hello folks and welcome to Triple T #36. Quite a few news items I want to share with you this week so let’s dive right in!
iPad available April 3rd
Get that work overtime in folks to build that iPad fund! It is coming out on April 3rd and pre-orders start on Friday! If you are looking to get an iPad, what features are you looking forward to? I like the eBook reader function of it and how easy it is to access the eBook store from the library. But I also like the ability that iWork will have apps for it via Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. If your not interested in it but would like to see some features added to it and then may get it, what features would those be?
Google Docs for blog posting
So did you know you can use Google Docs to compose and publish to your WordPress based blog? It takes some tweaking but it can be done. The only drawback is the ability to set categories and tags from within Google Docs, for that you will have to do within WordPress. So I guess this means I have a suggestion for Google now. In the meantime I will continue to use MacJournal to write my blog posts.
WordPress blogs get near real-time updates
Speaking of WordPress, they just announced support for PubSubHubbub (PuSH). What does that mean in non-geek terms you may ask? Simply put it now alerts RSS feeds faster meaning they will show up in say Google Reader much faster than before.

Interesting little article here on TWC teaming up with the telecoms for broadband support.
Apple purging the app store
I’m sure you have heard on how Apple is cutting down on certain questionable apps in the app store. Personally I don’t have a problem with this. A lot of these apps are simply glorified web apps.
This Week’s iPhone/iPod touch apps
Shazam and Shazam Encore - Ok this review is for my good friend Mary from Minnesota who asked me about it. Course if you just want to know what that current song playing at the coffee shop is, then the free version of Shazam will do you just fine. But if you want it to be a little more social network friendly then there is the $4.99 version of Shazam Encore (they also offer a (RED) version of the app as well. With that version you can share your tagged results and it integrates with your Last.fm or Pandora apps too when selecting on a tag for the song.
Trip Journal - If you are a world traveler then this app you will love. It allows you to tag locations with photos and notes. They just came out with version 4.0 and for a limited time it is 99 cents instead of the standard $2.99 price.
Buzzie - If you are really getting into Google Buzz then you will be happy to know there is an app for it now at a modest $1.99. It really is a nice interface and I like it better than the desktop version of Buzz actually.
Google Voice - Ok so technically a web app but a darn good one. Google found a way to circumvent the Apple/AT&T gate keeper (yet Skype has an app...figure that one out for me). Basically you can use it to initiate phone calls like you would on the desktop version. Did I mention I no longer have a long distance plan with AT&T on our landline?

Tuesday Tech Talk #13
Ok sorry for the late edition of Triple T but lets get down to it.
Gmail Push for the iPhone
Reading my Google Reader today I cam across this story on MacRumors on Google finally offering Push email on the iPhone. There is some manual entry of information you will have to do though. Basically you set it up using Microsoft Exchange setting but here’s the rub, if you already use Exchange on the iPhone, you can’t set it up as you can only have one Exchange client at a time on the iPhone. You can also sync your Google Calendar and Contacts to push as well.
3 Days until MMS on the iPhone
I got a text message on my iPhone today saying, “Picture & video messaging (MMS) will be available for iPhone on 9/25. While we prepare your account for MMS capability, the current ”view my message“ experience will be turned off but your ability to send and receive text messages will not be affected.” Basically I never used the “view my message” web site so any time I got the message from a friend I simply deleted the message. Congrats AT&T, it only took you 2 years to get a technology on the iPhone that my wife enjoys on her Sony-Ericson phone. But what would you expect from a company who’s logo looks too much like the Death Star.
Wii price drop to $199
For those waiting for the Wii to take a price drop, your wish is finally coming true starting Sunday. The Nintendo Wii will drop $50 to $199.
The AT&T 3G MicroCell
Well speaking of the Death Star, if you are lucky enough to live in the Charlotte, NC area, you can use the MicroCell and increase your signal strength within a 40 foot area. Just put it near a window oh and btw it costs $150 with no additional fees.
This Week’s iPhone/iPod touch apps
Pingle - Someone asked me earlier what Pingle was after I posted a screen shot of my social media apps on my iPhone. Well quite simply, Pingle is a web app interface for Ping.fm with a couple of enhancements. One, you can post a photo direct from your camera or photo album on the iPhone attached to your post and 2, you can include your location with your post.
GSPN.tv - If you are a fan of Cliff Ravenscraft and his many podcasts then you will love this app. Basically it allows you to play an episode on your iPhone. It even has an area to enter your GSPN Plus membership information to get all the episodes offered.
Shazam - Ever find yourself at a public place like a restaurant, coffee shop, or even a party and a song starts to play that you really like but don’t know who sings it? Well just set the “Tag Now” on this a handy free app and let it do the work for you. It will even give you a direct iTunes Store link to buy the song on the spot.
Sportacular - Another great free app for the sports fan is Sportacular, this app gives you the upcoming schedule and current scores. It even offers the point spread on a game. Plus you can specify to just show your favorite teams.
MobileNavigator - Well I finally gave in and bought a GPS app for my iPhone. After the TomTom received a look warm reception, Navigon exploited a weakness in the TomTom and added Text-to-Speech voice guidance, oh and for good measure they are selling it $10 cheaper than the TomTom. Just make sure you have the 1.44GB available on your iPhone for this one. We used it on our trip to Memphis last week when we saw Matt Maher in concert and the directions were right on the money.
