Hello folks and welcome to another edition of Tuesday Tech Talk. I am fresh back from Nashville where I attended PodCamp so I had to absurd a lot of tech news in a short period of time. Let’s see what is going on this week!
Firefox 4
Last week Mozilla released the official version of Firefox 4. It brings several new notable features, my personal favorite is Pin Apps which basically allows you to take your most frequently opened tabs and reduce them to favicons in the upper left hand corner of the browser for quick access.
In addition it also has a feature called Grouped Tabs which sets up multiple tabs of pages for quick access. To give you an idea of what is new, check out the video. I would post it here but Mozilla does not give me the option to embed their videos. I am a fan of Google Chrome but I decided to give Firefox 4 a week of exclusive use and I will let you know next week of what I think about it. MacWorld has chimed in with their initial review of it which you can read here.
Yahoo debuts “Future of Search”
Remember this company? We used to check them out for search results before Google came along. Well, anyhow, they are rolling out a new search technology. I have to say it is really impressive but is it enough to compete against Google at this point? Only time will tell.
Audible offers WiFi download to Kindle
Huge news for Kindle users, Audible now offers the ability to download their 50,000 titles via WiFi to your Kindle. I don’t have a Kindle myself...yet. But this is a lot more convenient than having to side-load via USB.
Warner Brothers adds more Films to Facebook
After offering the Dark Knight on Facebook for users to rent and watch, Warner Brothers is now offering 5 additional movies to the service. The new movies are Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Inception, Life as We Know It and Yogi Bear. I think the jury is still out on this one as no other studios have come on board to offer their content on Facebook. I still stand by the fact that people in general do not want to watch a movie on a computer screen which is why AppleTV and Roku boxes are doing so well right now.

Tuesday Tech Talk #84
Hello folks and welcome to another edition of Tuesday Tech Talk. Was a light week last week but over the weekend we got some big news that you may have heard about. Let’s see what is going on.
AT&T buying T-Mobile USA
Of course this is the big news announced on Sunday. AT&T is buying T-Mobile for $39 Billion and the deal if approved by regulators, should close in about a year. T-Mobile has posted a webpage that addresses customers most popular questions about the merger. The heart of this merger seems to be about one thing, matching Verizon on a nationwide 4G, or LTE network as it is also known. Time will tell if this is a positive or negative merger.
AT&T brings COW’s to SXSW
I know Texas has a lot of cows but at South By Southwest this year, AT&T brought out their own version of COW’s (Cellular On Wheels). Basically mini cell towers on trucks to create great voice and data connectivity at SXSW. You may recall a few years ago AT&T hit a low with SXSW attendees when their network choked on the demand from users.
AT&T Capping Broadband
Well, the trend in capping in the ISP industry is about to pick up speed once again. AT&T has announced it will cap its DSL customers at 150GB per month and its U-Verse customers at 250GB (same as Comcast). Personally I think this sucks! I pay a handsome sum to my ISP (Comcast) and for my expense I am told I am capped? How about this Comcast, AT&T, Time Warner, etc. How about you take some of that money your customers give you each month and build out your network so it can handle the bandwidth use!

2010 set a new record as it was the first year that more people turned to the web for their news than they do the newspaper according to the Pew Research Firm. I’m actually surprised this hasn’t happened sooner as I have been reading our local paper for years online.
Facebook taking on Groupon
Facebook will begin testing a new Groupon-style service to its customers via its existing Deals service. Test markets will include San Francisco, San Diego, Atlanta, Dallas, and Austin.
FastMac U-Socket
I remember seeing something about this AC outlet several months ago, but it ran into delays. Now it appears the FastMac AC and USB outlet is ready for business. As you can see, it offers 2 USB ports to the side of the standard AC plugs. It is probably more ideal for a new construction than an upgrade install, but I can see this taking off in new hotel construction.

Tuesday Tech Talk #77
Hey everybody and welcome to another edition of Tuesday Tech Talk. Covered quite a bit last 2 weeks with CES and Verizon-iPhone announcement, let’s see what this week brings us.
Facebook grants Developers Access to Phone and Addresses
So if you have ever granted third party developers easy integration to your FB account, you now may be giving them more information then you are comfortable with. This is not cool in my opinion and as soon as I read the article I deleted my phone numbers from my FB account, which is a shame because it made it easier for my long lost friends to get in touch with me offline. So it is back to the old way of doing things, if you need my phone number, drop me an email.
Computer History Museum now open
If you are ever in the Mountain View, CA area, then you may want to stop by the recently opened Computer History Museum. 25,000 square feet of geeky fun, I may have to schedule a vacation now where I actually go somewhere.
Spotify Coming to America Finally?
According to the New York Post, Spotify could soon be finally available in the US as it nears a deal with Sony Music and one other unmentioned label. The article goes on to mention that both Apple and Google have shown interested in a partnership with the Luxembourg-based company.
Steve Jobs takes Medical Leave of Absence again
Not a lot of details as to why as the CEO of Apple is very private person when it comes to himself, but for the second time Steve Jobs is taking a medical leave and Tim Cook will run the day to day operations just as he did the last time while Jobs remains CEO during his absence. So this may explain why Cook was there for the iPhone-Verizon announcement last week and not Jobs as many expected. We here at TupeloGeek wish Steve nothing but the best and pray for a full recovery for him and look forward to his excellent keynote speeches soon enough. I was thinking of holding this back for AppleTalk Thursday, but Steve Jobs has such an impact on technology in general, I thought it was appropriate to share the news here.

Tuesday Tech Talk #76
Hello everybody and welcome to another edition of Tuesday Tech Talk. A lot of stuff to cover with CES last week and the iPhone-Verizon announcement earlier today so I’m going to get right into it.
Verizon Gets the iPhone!
Yes, the big day a lot of people have wished for has happen! Earlier today Verizon and Apple announced the iPhone 4 will go on sale on February 10th at Verizon and Apple Store locations as well as online on their sites. Here is what we do know, the 16GB will have the $199 and 32GB will be $299 both with a 2 Year Contract (same as AT&T), however Verizon is throwing in a mobile hot spot device with the iPhone that can connect up to 5 devices...take that AT&T tethering! Also the CDMA based iPhone deal with Verizon is NON-exclusive so Apple has the freedom to allow other CDMA carriers in the US to carry the phone as well. Not sure if AT&T still has an exclusivity on GSM based iPhone’s in the US but I doubt they do which may be good news for T-Mobile. I would love to see the iPhone on many US carriers as possible as it helps in fighting off the Android and Windows Phone 7 for market share. If any more details come about, I will have more in AppleTalk Thursday.
MySpace lays off 47% of Workforce
Just announced today is the news that MySpace will layoff about 500 employees or about 47% of its workforce. I can’t say I am surprised, with Facebook finding more and more ways to innovate, MySpace is quickly falling behind in the battle of social network sites. They are owned by NewsCorp and one has to wonder just how much longer Rupert Murdoch is willing to hold onto this operation.
Facebook to go Public in 2012?
Although Mark Zuckerberg continues to deny it, an interesting article here hints at an April 2012 Initial Public Offering for Facebook stock. It would be interesting just to see what it would be valued at on a per share basis. Something rivaling Google I would think. Only time will tell though if this will happen. But in another interesting story, LinkedIn may become the first social media site to offer an IPO.
Ballmer: Windows 7 is an OS for all devices
Uh, no its really not! I really don’t need anything made from Microsoft in my personal tech ecosystem! I don’t use any of the Office products anymore (thanks Google Docs), I don’t know anyone that uses MSN Messenger so no use there either. At this point I am living Windows free and loving it so Steve take your operating system and stick it where the sun don’t shine...Redmond!
AT&T LTE Plans
AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega announced that AT&T will start to deploy its next generation LTE wireless network and capable mobile devices around mid-2011 (hey isn’t that when the iPhone gets updated?), with plans to have it completed by the end of 2013.
LG annonces SmartTV Upgrader
LG is getting into the battleground with AppleTV, Roku, and GoogleTV boxes that offer internet based services for your TV. Like the AppleTV, it has a similar shape and requires WiFi and an HDMI capable TV to connect to. No pricing mentioned in the article but I would say $99 would be the price as it is similar to the AppleTV.

Tuesday Tech Talk #74
Hello all and welcome to the last Tuesday Tech Talk of 2010. I will be taking a Christmas and New Years vacation from blogging next week. So lets take a look at the news over the past week in technology.
Paul Allen’s Lawsuit Against Everyone Thrown Out
You may recall that Microsoft co-founder tried to sue Apple, Google, Facebook, Netflix, eBay, and AOL among others over 4 patents for e-commerce. Well, the judge in the case has thrown it out calling it too vague. Allen has until 12/28 to re-file the suit but he really shouldn’t. He looks small and pitiful by doing so and it’s not like he is hurting for money at this point. Besides if he wants to go down that road Apple can easily argue that Windows was based on the Mac OS in the first place which it is. But you don’t see Steve Jobs or Steve Wozniak going around suing Microsoft and the different varieties of Linux.
Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg Time Person of the Year
Time Magazine has named Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg as its 2010 Person of the Year. He won after beating out Steve Jobs, Lady Gaga, the 33 Chilean Minors, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai. Facebook has certainly been busy this year with many features added and the movie The Social Network certainly helped out as well even if Zuckerberg himself hates the film.
More troubles for Yahoo
Yahoo fresh off announcing it will layoff 650 employees, is now looking at cutting unproductive services and selling off one of its popular ones. As you have read here before, I have my doubts about Yahoo’s longterm viability just based on their recent history of a lack of innovation. I am pretty much divesting myself of any Yahoo dependence. For example, I use Facebook and Picasa as an alternative to Flickr but still maintain my Flickr account. That being said, there is a great article on how to backup your Flickr albums.
My guess is if the worst case scenario did happen to Yahoo, they would certainly sell off Flickr to either Google or Facebook, maybe even Apple. I’m thinking about posting a separate blog post regarding a Post-Yahoo survival guide and what services to start using now just in case.
AT&T Acquires Qualcomm’s Flo-TV Wireless Spectrum
AT&T looking to bolster its next technology of wireless broadband, announced it has purchased Qualcomm’s soon to be defunct Flo-TV’s broadband for $2 Billion. The new broadband will really help AT&T in high urban areas like New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco where it has struggled with network issues.
DirecTV Bringing Personalized Ads to Customers in Late Summer of 2011
DirecTV is partnering with Starcom MediaVest to bring a more personalized advertising model to consumers. I don’t know about you but this screams privacy issues. I have a DVR so I never see the ads anyway. They hope to have it up and going by August or September 2011.
FCC approves Apartheid Net Neutrality Plan
Yes, I know I am using a strong word there, but the new ruling by the FCC only protects wired services from ISP’s blocking legal internet traffic, for wireless mobile users it does not apply so it is separate and unequal in how it treats wireless users. Will be interesting if it is challenged in court how it would rule if filed under such a case. Think of Florida 2000 recount as the case for it.

Tuesday Tech Talk #72
Greetings everyone and welcome to another edition of Tuesday Tech Talk. Quite a bit of news this week I want to share so lets get right into it!
I have an iPhone 4!
Out of the blue, I upgraded to an iPhone 4. Thanks to a week long promotion going on at Radio Shack, I was able to trade in my iPhone 3GS for a $125 credit toward an iPhone 4 which was also sold for $50 off the regular price. What this meant was I was able to walk out of the store with a brand new 32GB iPhone 4 for $125 instead of the regular $300 price, a $175 savings! But it gets even better, my wife who has had a flip phone for a few years now, purchased an 8GB 3GS for $49. Now the catch is obviously you have to be eligible for an upgrade with AT&T and you agree to a new 2 year contract.
So, how is the iPhone 4? It is great! I can FaceTime now with it, take HDR photos, and the Retina display is awesome! You really have to see an iPhone 4 in person to grasp just how rich the display is. A good test is to visit the New York Times website and close in on the “New York Times” banner and the detail of the font is spectacular! My wife really likes her first iPhone and loves that her Yahoo email comes right to her email now instead of having to login on the Yahoo website. It has been a bit of a learning curve for her, but she likes it a lot! Here is an HDR photo I took last night at Oby’s of our bread pudding dessert.
Yum!! So, if you are eligible for an upgrade from AT&T, you might want to check in at your local Radio Shack before Saturday.
Facebook Profile Facelift
So I watched 60 Minutes on Sunday night which I never do but Mark Zuckerberg was interviewed by Lesley Stahl and they hinted something new Facebook was working on, would be shown on 60 Minutes. Sure enough, they have given a whole new look to the Facebook profile page. To give you an idea, here is what mine looks like now.
So basically you enter in your key information and it spells out a nice summary of who you are. It also offers an expanded family tree for connections. Now in addition to spouse, brother, sister, mom and dad connections, it also offers uncle, aunt, cousins, niece and nephews. Interesting enough in-laws is still not an option so if you have a brother-in-law for example and want to add the family connection, you will just have to label them as a brother for now. So check it out, I happen to like it but your mileage may vary.
Google offers e-Books
Also announced yesterday, Google is now an e-book seller and offering reader apps for iOS and Android devices. Stay tuned for this Friday’s Googling Friday where I talk a lot more about the pros and cons of Google’s e-book reader app.
Mac App Store to launch Monday?
Apple may be preparing to launch their Mac App Store as early as this coming Monday. Apple did state during the OS X 10.7 Lion preview that they would launch a beta version of the Mac App Store within 90 days so this seems to fit into that timeline. If it does then we will have something to discuss here next week.
AirPlay coming to Safari and Third-party apps in 2011
Once again Steve Jobs fired off an email reply from his iPhone to someone that asked about AirPlay limitations on video from iOS devices to AppleTV. Jobs states that Apple hopes to add video features to third-party apps and Safari. This is great news for folks that use Netflix and Hulu Plus on their iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad as they can then stream video to the AppleTV.
This Week’s iOS app Reviews
iMove ($4.99) - IF you have an iPhone 4 then you really should get this app. What it does is allow you to edit video shot on your iPhone 4, on your iPhone 4. I was able to put together a video overview of the Google Books reader app using my iPhone 4 and iMovie. You can find the video here!
Loopt (FREE) - Yes, another location based social networking app. I try them all folks and what I like about this one is it integrates with Facebook’s Places. So you tie your Facebook account into Loopt and whenever you check into a location using the Facebook app, Loopt will also show you at such place. You can also connect your Twitter account to Loopt as well.
Words with Friends (FREE) - Ok so there is also an iPad version as well. They also offer a paid version without advertising. Basically Words with Friends is Scrabble that you can play with friends and family. You will have to setup a username, but it is fairly easy to setup a game quickly with a friend. I have learned words I didn’t know existed and you can also chat with each other as well. It is a lot of fun.
Google Books (FREE) - As I mentioned earlier, Google is offering their own e-book reader app now (iPad version). The look and feel is similar to that of the Apple iBooks and Amazon Kindle app. On Friday, I will have more about it.

I have an iPhone 4!
Out of the blue, I upgraded to an iPhone 4. Thanks to a week long promotion going on at Radio Shack, I was able to trade in my iPhone 3GS for a $125 credit toward an iPhone 4 which was also sold for $50 off the regular price. What this meant was I was able to walk out of the store with a brand new 32GB iPhone 4 for $125 instead of the regular $300 price, a $175 savings! But it gets even better, my wife who has had a flip phone for a few years now, purchased an 8GB 3GS for $49. Now the catch is obviously you have to be eligible for an upgrade with AT&T and you agree to a new 2 year contract.
So, how is the iPhone 4? It is great! I can FaceTime now with it, take HDR photos, and the Retina display is awesome! You really have to see an iPhone 4 in person to grasp just how rich the display is. A good test is to visit the New York Times website and close in on the “New York Times” banner and the detail of the font is spectacular! My wife really likes her first iPhone and loves that her Yahoo email comes right to her email now instead of having to login on the Yahoo website. It has been a bit of a learning curve for her, but she likes it a lot! Here is an HDR photo I took last night at Oby’s of our bread pudding dessert.
Yum!! So, if you are eligible for an upgrade from AT&T, you might want to check in at your local Radio Shack before Saturday.
Facebook Profile Facelift
So I watched 60 Minutes on Sunday night which I never do but Mark Zuckerberg was interviewed by Lesley Stahl and they hinted something new Facebook was working on, would be shown on 60 Minutes. Sure enough, they have given a whole new look to the Facebook profile page. To give you an idea, here is what mine looks like now.
So basically you enter in your key information and it spells out a nice summary of who you are. It also offers an expanded family tree for connections. Now in addition to spouse, brother, sister, mom and dad connections, it also offers uncle, aunt, cousins, niece and nephews. Interesting enough in-laws is still not an option so if you have a brother-in-law for example and want to add the family connection, you will just have to label them as a brother for now. So check it out, I happen to like it but your mileage may vary.
Google offers e-Books
Also announced yesterday, Google is now an e-book seller and offering reader apps for iOS and Android devices. Stay tuned for this Friday’s Googling Friday where I talk a lot more about the pros and cons of Google’s e-book reader app.
Mac App Store to launch Monday?
Apple may be preparing to launch their Mac App Store as early as this coming Monday. Apple did state during the OS X 10.7 Lion preview that they would launch a beta version of the Mac App Store within 90 days so this seems to fit into that timeline. If it does then we will have something to discuss here next week.
AirPlay coming to Safari and Third-party apps in 2011
Once again Steve Jobs fired off an email reply from his iPhone to someone that asked about AirPlay limitations on video from iOS devices to AppleTV. Jobs states that Apple hopes to add video features to third-party apps and Safari. This is great news for folks that use Netflix and Hulu Plus on their iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad as they can then stream video to the AppleTV.
This Week’s iOS app Reviews
iMove ($4.99) - IF you have an iPhone 4 then you really should get this app. What it does is allow you to edit video shot on your iPhone 4, on your iPhone 4. I was able to put together a video overview of the Google Books reader app using my iPhone 4 and iMovie. You can find the video here!
Loopt (FREE) - Yes, another location based social networking app. I try them all folks and what I like about this one is it integrates with Facebook’s Places. So you tie your Facebook account into Loopt and whenever you check into a location using the Facebook app, Loopt will also show you at such place. You can also connect your Twitter account to Loopt as well.
Words with Friends (FREE) - Ok so there is also an iPad version as well. They also offer a paid version without advertising. Basically Words with Friends is Scrabble that you can play with friends and family. You will have to setup a username, but it is fairly easy to setup a game quickly with a friend. I have learned words I didn’t know existed and you can also chat with each other as well. It is a lot of fun.

Googling Friday #13
Hello all and welcome to another edition of Googling Friday. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend last week. I am certainly stuffed. Well, let’s see what is going on in the world of Google this week.
Top 5 Free Google Apps add-ons for business
MacWorld has a nice article on the top 5 free add-on apps for businesses using Google Apps. Sounds like some cool stuff, as someone that doesn’t use Google Apps, I can’t really vouch for them personally but they sound very productive.
More struggles for GoogleTV
Sony has cut the price of its Blu-ray GoogleTV box by $100 as sales of GoogleTV devices have struggled. When it first launched, GoogleTV created a lot of buzz but TV networks soon began to disable their online video content from displaying on GoogleTV devices so it is not the cable/satellite killer a lot of people were thinking it would be. Apple with its AppleTV seems to be realistic with the current mood of TV networks but it has the ability to expand as market conditions become more flexible.
Google, Facebook, and others, tell FCC to grow a pair on Net Neutrality
A group of internet based companies have a message for FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, man up! They want the FCC to take a harder stand against companies like Comcast that want to establish a toll booth for various internet traffic. This is one area where I side with the Obama Administration on. I believe in an open internet where traffic can’t be impeded upon by internet providers. I pay Comcast $60 a month, if they have a problem with internet traffic, build a bigger pipeline, do something with my $60 a month I have given you for the last 5 years! It is called investing in your infrastructure! I also think the situation could be helped if we opened up areas to competition. My only options for internet are Comcast or AT&T DSL and with AT&T in my area I only get 1.5Mbps in my area from them which is a no-go for my AppleTV. Also we can really unleash the fiber optic market in more areas. I would love to have U-Verse or Verizon FiOS as my provider but due to market conditions, they are not yet. WIth those services, they generally begin at 15 Mbps which is more than double what Comcast offers me and at a cheaper rate.

This week Google updated Google Earth to version 6. It now includes trees and bridges in 3D. It was way cool and go check it out. Here is a snapshot from the Google blog.
Pretty cool huh and of course it is free! So go explore places you have never physically been before or places you have.

Tuesday Tech Talk #70
Hey everybody and welcome to another installment of Tuesday Tech Talk.
Big Brother looking at disabling your cellphone in a vehicle
This is somewhat tech and a lot political, but it was enough to fire up the libertarian in me (note the small “L”). Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood was quoted as stating the following:
“There’s a lot of technology out there now that can disable phones and we’re looking at that,” said LaHood on MSNBC. LaHood said the cellphone scramblers were one way, and also stressed the importance of “personal responsibility.”
Now here is the problem I have with this statement, scramblers would scramble any cellphone in the vehicle so even if you are a passenger in the vehicle, your cellphone would be scrambled too. Of course if you are driving you should not text and drive that is just personal responsibility which he states at the end. Never the less, with the whole controversy of TSA naked X-Ray machines and pat downs, the last thing the American people want to hear is how someone else in the government wants to take away more of our freedoms. Go shove it Mr. LaHood!
Hulu Plus leaves Preview and drops its price
Hulu Plus is now for everybody and at a $7.99 price and, is available on Roku boxes. No word yet on an AppleTV deal, but with it being available on the iPad and iPhone, it can only be a matter of time before it is available for AppleTV.
Zuckerberg talks Messaging, Data Portability, and Mistakes
Last week at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed the future of messaging and how email will be used in more formal communications, but more casual messaging is growing more and more through IM, SMS Texting, and Facebook messaging. He also touches on data portability and mistakes made.
Twitter CEO takes issue with China over labor sentencing over a retweet
Dick Costolo sent out a tweet last week critical of the Chinese government sentencing a woman for one year to a labor camp for “reeducation”. Here is a snap shot of the Tweet:
News Corp and Apple building iPad only Newspaper
According to Women’s Wear Daily, Apple and News Corp are collaborating on an iPad specific digital newspaper called The Daily, that would sell for 99 cents per week. There is even speculation that Rupert Murdoch and Steve Jobs will make a co-announcement sharing the stage together. I have thought the iPad is perfect for reading a digital newspaper, in-fact I subscribe to the Wall Street Journal newspaper on my iPad and if The Daily is anything like the WSJ, then we are in store for something special at a cheaper price than the WSJ.
Apple working on CDMA-GSM iPad?
According to All Things Digital, Apple may be working on a “World iPad” in that it would contain both a CDMA and GSM chipset to work with multiple carriers. If so this would be huge and is going to sell units in just about every wireless providers store. Take that Samsung Galaxy and Blackberry PlayBook!
GoogleTV gets double negative reviews from New York Times and Wall Street Journal
Basically calling it complex and not as straight forward as the AppleTV. The New York Times and WSJ said that GoogleTV is a step in the wrong direction and missing the mark, respectively. Quite frankly, I would agree, I played around with both the Logitech Revue and Sony-based systems and found it to be a cross between watching WebTV while viewing TV content. Look, if people want to browse the web while watching TV, their going to do it from their laptop, smartphone, or tablet device and not their TV. It may be ahead of its time possibly, but for right now it is a pure geek device and not something you would get your parents or grandparents. By contrast, the AppleTV is straight forward, you have a basic remote for browsing a basic onscreen menu to jump between the different services that all do one thing, provide video and audio content for your TV. Once again, Apple gets it, try again Google!

Tuesday Tech Talk #69
Hello folks and welcome to another edition of Tuesday Tech Talk. I apologize for the later posting but the Fab Four is always worth waiting for I believe. So lets dive into the news.
Ladies and Gentlemen...THE BEATLES!!!!
Yes, earlier today The Beatles catalog became available in the iTunes Music Store. The long wait for the Fab Four has finally arrived! Now based on Apple’s homepage yesterday, a lot of people were expecting something big like maybe a cloud based iTunes. But considering the announcement went up yesterday on the Apple.com site and wasn’t a scheduled press event based invite a week or so ahead of time, I wasn’t thinking cloud and had a suspicion it was The Beatles based on them having 4 clocks one of which was London time. My first download was Hey Jude followed by Let it Be and The Long and Winding Road with more tracks and albums to follow I’m sure.
Facebook rethinks Messaging
Yesterday Mark Zuckerberg announced a new messaging system for Facebook that will be rolled out over the next couple of months. It basically adds IM, texting, and email into a single communication model. You will get a @facebook.com style email address as part of it but it is more of an informal communication model with no subject line like in email. Once I get an invite, I will play around with it and write more about it later.
iOS 4.2, where art thou?
There was much speculation last week that iOS 4.2 would arrive on Friday but then news broke of the iPad having WiFi issues with the developer gold master which a updated version was seeded to developers but this will probably push back the release date to hopefully sometime this week. Apple has officially stated 4.2 will be released sometime in November so they really have 2 weeks left to stay within their promise, but I think iPhone and iPad users will be using AirPlay on Thanksgiving Day myself.
New York Times to rank E-Book bestsellers
With more and more people buying their books on Kindle, Nook, iPad, and other electronic devices, the New York Times early next year will rank E-Book fiction and non-fiction bestsellers. This is long overdue considering the Kindle has been around for quite sometime. I myself use the Kindle app on my iPad and looking to get the new Kindle itself early next year for my reading in long sessions.
Next generation iPhone and iPad may support glove use
Hitachi is developing a new touch screen that recognizes insulator based touching (gloves or stylus), this technology could then be based in the iPhone 5 next summer. Not really a big problem down in these parts, but for people in the Midwest or Northeast, this might be welcome news during those harsh winter months.
This Week’s iPhone/iPod touch/iPad apps
Talking Tom Cat (FREE) - This cute basic app is really fun! My friend Dave alerted me to this app. Basically you can speak things to it and it will repeat what you say in a cute high pitched voice. You can also pet it, “stomp” on its paw or just slap it around a bit...yeah it’s weird and would offend PETA, but it is free.
Facebook (FREE) - I may have discussed the Facebook app before but it has been updated since. One of the new features is Places, similar to FourSquare you can check into places but Facebook has used its popularity to partner with business to have special offers at places. For example, my wife and I were in Nashville this past weekend and when we checked into Chipotle, there was a Post-it icon next to Chipotle in the list of locations. Upon clicking on Chipotle, it described the offer which was when you buy a burrito, burrito bowl, salad, or taco, you get a second entree free. Being that it was my wife and myself, it was perfect as we saved about $6 on the second entree. It was a weekend offer only but it looks like Chipotle will be offering it again this weekend. This is how location checkin will take off in the mainstream. FourSquare is nice but it is just a competition to become mayor of places.
Nightstand Central for iPad (FREE) - This is a handy app for anyone staying at a hotel or with family. Just load up the app before heading to bed and set your alarm if you want. It has several alarm options, my favorite is Church Bells. It will also display the current city or town you are in and the temperature outside. Another nice feature is sliding your finger up and down the display will brighten or dim the screen so it isn’t glaring as you try and sleep. There is also an iPhone version as well. But the iPad version gives you more of a standard alarm clock feel.
Windowshop by Amazon (FREE) - This is how browsing the Amazon Store should look like on an iPad! It is like browsing the Amazon Store on a desktop or laptop computer but fully customized to the iPad. Trust me, wants you try it, there is no other way to browse Amazon. I actually use it anytime I want to look at Amazon.

Tuesday Tech Talk #64
Greetings everyone and welcome to another edition of Tuesday Tech Talk. Please excuse the late edition this week, I had some lower back pain that made it difficult to sit in a writing position for an extended period of time. The good news is I am much better now and Phillip Rivers I am not apparently when throwing around a football on a beach. So with that in mind, we have a lot of tech news to catch up on.
iPhone to Verizon...No, Seriously This Time
So I have tried to stay away from the whole “when is the iPhone coming to Verizon” chatter in this space because quite frankly it was a whole lot of rumor and speculation from less than credible sources. But now we have the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times saying that in fact, Apple is preparing a CDMA based iPhone for Verizon in the early part of next year. To add further credibility, Verizon brick-and-mortar stores will start selling the iPad on October 28th in conjunction with MiFi mobile hot spots.
So what does this mean for me personally? Well, my contract with AT&T expires in June which is right around the time of the 5th gen iPhone which no doubt will sport a GSM and CDMA-based models. I will let my contract run out and then decide at that time who to sign up with. Verizon no doubt has better coverage but the drawback of CDMA is you are not able to access data and voice at the same time...that is a major issue for me. Apple “Back to the Mac” event
Next Wednesday, Apple will be hosting a Mac based event on its campus. Speculation is we will see iLife ’11 and iWork ’11 make their debut along with possible upgrades for the MacBook Air and a sneak peak at OS X 10.7 (Lion). I will either delay Triple T next week or have a special blog about the event on Wednesday.
Steve Ballmer Speaks Idiot Again
Every time Baldo Ballmer says something stupidity comes out. Yes, Steve it is true the Microsoft brand does mean something to users...CRAP! Even fertilizer can have a brand Steve, doesn’t mean I want to smell it just the same as a lot of people don’t want to use Windows but have to because of a backwards thinking business culture.

GetGlue (FREE) - This new social media app allows you to share just what your watching, reading, playing, listening to, wine your drinking, or topic you are thinking about. Also has an iPad version.
Tango (FREE) - So you don’t have an iPhone 4 or the newest iPod touch for FaceTime? Well no problem Tango is here. It even allows you to use a 3G connection too. Course if you have an iPhone 3GS or earlier it does make it hard to chat without the front facing camera, but I am willing to try it.
Angry Birds HD($4.99)- I have heard Fr. Roderick and others talk about this game for the longest time but never tried it...until now. Boy is this game both fun and a major time suck. Justin.tv (FREE) - If you want to live video stream right from your iPhone, then you should check this out. I have tried uStream’s app and found it to crash or not work, but Justin.tv works like a snap and it is easy to find anyone that is streaming live on Justin.tv, on your iPhone as well. With uStream it only list the “popular” streams. In addition, my live chat room stream is now Justin.tv based.

iPhone to Verizon...No, Seriously This Time
So I have tried to stay away from the whole “when is the iPhone coming to Verizon” chatter in this space because quite frankly it was a whole lot of rumor and speculation from less than credible sources. But now we have the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times saying that in fact, Apple is preparing a CDMA based iPhone for Verizon in the early part of next year. To add further credibility, Verizon brick-and-mortar stores will start selling the iPad on October 28th in conjunction with MiFi mobile hot spots.
So what does this mean for me personally? Well, my contract with AT&T expires in June which is right around the time of the 5th gen iPhone which no doubt will sport a GSM and CDMA-based models. I will let my contract run out and then decide at that time who to sign up with. Verizon no doubt has better coverage but the drawback of CDMA is you are not able to access data and voice at the same time...that is a major issue for me. Googling Friday #4
Hello everybody and welcome to another edition of Googling Friday. This week I will be talking about the Google Chrome browser. First, lets see what has been going on this week in the world of Google.
Google rolls out Priority Inbox
Google announced on Monday a new way filter Gmail that identifies priority email over regular email and places them in a Priority Inbox. If it makes a mistake in misidentifying priority email you can mark it as so and will learn as it goes along. Users should see it roll out this week.
Google purchases Angstro
In another move that shows Google is setting up to challenge Facebook in the social networking world, Google has bought Angstro and hired its founder to help out with its social networking product Google Me. Google Me...that sounds like something familiar.
Google Chrome browser
Now time for this weeks Google app review. Unlike other apps this one is not a web based application. Google Chrome is a desktop based web browser just like Firefox, Safari, and that one browser made by the evil empire from Redmond.
So what stands Google Chrome apart from the others? In a word...speed! The browser opens up fast and launches websites fast. When you think of Chrome vs Firefox, think of a cheetah racing against an elephant. I no longer use Firefox and just have Chrome and Safari on my Macs.
Another cool function is the extensions. Google Chrome has quite a selection of available extensions that sit to the right of your search/web address bar. Speaking of which when wanting to do a search in Google Chrome you use the web bar to search. It is smart enough to determine searches from web addresses.
When it comes to bookmarks, Google Chrome will sync them across multiple computers. This is great if you use Google Chrome at work and at home as whatever you bookmark on one, will be on the other as well.
So go check it out, I highly recommend Google Chrome and if you are using Firefox you will soon find you no longer need it.

Tuesday Tech Talk #58
Hello folks and welcome to another edition of Tuesday Thursday Tech Talk. I apologize for the late arrival this week but I was busy the early part of this week. Well lets see what is going on this week in technology.
Facebook says Places everyone
Last week Facebook introduced a new feature that allows you to check in at places on your mobile phone that has the Facebook app. The one feature of it I find questionable is the ability to tag others at that place. That being said it will alert that user if they have been tagged and gives them the option to remove the tag. The difference between it and Foursquare is you don’t get to be mayor of a place on Places like you do on Foursquare and Foursquare doesn’t have tagging.
Intel buys McAfee
News from out of the blue last week as the big chip maker purchased the anti virus software maker for $8 Billion! Wonder if AMD will now look for a dance partner?
Couple uses iPad to marry them
Ok as someone that loves both technology and marriage, this article caught my eye. A couple used the iPad to read their vows and the bride even used the iPad to compose her vows and then the wedding official (not a priest as the linked article states) read it as well to officiate it. All that being said, to each their own but no way would I have done that at my wedding in 2001 even if an iPad existed then. Full disclosure, I used Mac Office PowerPoint to propose to my wife back in 2000 on my beige G3 desktop that ran on a 266 MHz processor.
Verizon bringing FiOS TV to mobile devices, DISH goes online
The world of mobile TV viewing continues to evolve with Verizon announcing it will soon offer an app that will allow you to view FiOS programming on your iPad, Android, Blackberry Storm, and Windows Mobile 6.5 devices but ONLY from within the home. Which kind of makes no sense. I mean really the purpose of such an app would be if you are not at home. In other content provider news, DISH Network is bringing a handful of channels to its Dish Online service.
Western Digital introduces HomePlug device
Western Digital is making a plunge into home networking by allowing you to extend your WiFi connection to electrical outlets allowing you to connect your HDTV for example to the internet. The Livewire will sell for $140.
Apple negotiating $1 TV show rentals
Ahead of the expected AppleTV revamp next month, Apple is in negotiations with FOX, ABC, and CBS to allow consumers to rent TV shows for a 48 hour window for a dollar each episode.
Jail breaking your iPhone won’t send you to jail
I have never really felt the need to jail break my iPhone. Believe it or not I am a happy AT&T customer since 3G arrived in Tupelo. Don’t get me started with Comcast though. But if one wanted to, well #1 you are on your own if you want tech support from Apple but #2 it is legal.
This Week’s iPhone/iPod touch/iPad apps
Madden NFL 11 ($12.99 iPad, $7.99 iPhone/iPod touch - I have to admit I have never really used my iPad or iPhone as a gaming device beyond using Farmville or Solitaire. But I am really enjoying playing Madden on my iPad. There is a learning curve to it especially on defense, but once you play a couple of games it gets pretty easy (hint: rush the quarterback on defense to force incomplete passes or even interceptions and the possible sack). I don’t have the iPhone version but my friend Dave does and he tends to love it. So far my Chargers are undefeated and winning by 35 or more points, I even beat the Seahawks 76-21...in Seattle.
We Rule (FREE) - I have heard Fr. Roderick, Cliff Ravenscraft and Leo Laporte all mention this app so I finally downloaded it. The best way to describe it is English village meets Farmville. You have a castle that you can expand the more levels you go up and plant crops, collect taxes from the citizens, and continue to expand your landscape as you advance in levels. Tuesday Tech Talk #57
Hello folks and welcome to another edition of Triple T. Quite a few diverse things going on this week so lets dive right into things.
Star Wars goes Blu-ray in 2011
YES!! Last week George Lucas announced that all 6 Star Wars movies will be available next year in a single pack. Start saving your money now kids (young and old). Keep in mind it will only be the special edition of the movies not the original due to cost.
Booking flights through Facebook...on Delta
If you travel a lot on Delta and are a Facebook user then your in luck. You can now book your flight with them without even leaving Facebook. Now lets see how soon Southwest and AirTran jump on board.
What happened to Yahoo?
I read a great article on why Yahoo stalled while Google surpassed it as the lead search engine. It is a great read from a Yahoo insider on what went wrong. I personally don’t use many Yahoo features these days. The only one I do use from time to time is Yahoo Messenger and that is to chat with mom. With Facebook having chat most of my friends that were on Yahoo are now on Facebook chat.
New iPods in September?
More speculation pointing to an iPod refresh next month. One of the items mentioned is an iPod touch with 2 cameras similar to the iPhone 4 and would offer FaceTime. This makes perfect sense as FaceTime as of now is only available over WiFi and the touch is strictly a WiFi device. We shall see though.
Majority of Verizon customers would buy iPhone
According to a recent survey, 51% of Verizon customers said they would have an interest in buying an iPhone if it was available on the CDMA based carrier. Things may get interesting if per the rumors the iPhone becomes available on Verizon in January.
Certain Pink Floyd albums disappear from iTunes and Amazon
Per the terms of the contract between the band and EMI, certain albums by the British based rock band are no longer available. Most notably The Wall and Wish You Were Here.

Tuesday Tech Talk #48
Hello folks and welcome to another edition of Tuesday Tech Talk. The World Wide Developers Conference is a week away so Triple T #49 should have quite a bit of coverage from the WWDC keynote. But as for this edition of #48 lets get right down to it!
New Facebook Privacy Settings
Facebook has taken a lot of heat lately for it’s privacy settings or lack there of. But the biggest social networking site (500 million users) announced last week a new set of easier to use settings for controlling your privacy and content. Speaking for myself I tend to lock down my status updates to just my friends. But the new settings they announced are a huge step in the right direction.
Comcast to offer extreme 105Mbps internet
So if you can’t wait for Google to launch their fiber optic network in your neck of the woods, then you might want to check and see if Comcast is offering their 105Mbps Extreme speed internet where you live. Oh, did I mention the install price is $249 and the price for this speed is $200 a month? I love having fast internet, I’m not spending $200 a month on it though!
New slimmer Kindle on the way?
According to Bloomberg News Amazon maybe rolling out a thinner but still black and white screen Kindle in August. With the Kindle already 0.36” thin, one has to wonder just how much thinner can a Kindle get?
LG 84” 3DTV
So if you have the space and money available, LG has a 3DTV for you! All 84 inches of it. Course you will need a TV provider with 3D programming or a 3D DVD player to take full advantage of it and some glasses I suppose otherwise you just have a blurry picture.
Concrete incased USB drive
So you need a 128GB hard drive? How about one in concrete? Well its not out yet, only a concept at this point.

Skype (Free) - Skype has updated their iPhone app to be able to make Skype to Skype calls over 3G. So I guess this begs the question, how soon until we see the Google Voice app for the iPhone?
Barnes & Noble eReader for iPad (Free) - B&N has released their eReader app for the iPad. So now your options for book buying on the iPad now includes iBooks, Kindle Store, and now Barnes & Noble’s ebook’s store.

iPad 3G Shipping End of Month
Apple announced the iPad WiFi+3G will ship to pre-order customers starting April 30th. I’ve decided that this will be the model I will get as it just makes sense to have the 3G as an option.
FarmVille Headed to iPhone/iPad
Yes, for those that need to harvest their crops more frequently, soon you will be able to as Zynga the maker of the game is in the process of rewriting it into HTML5. One thing I learned is that FV now has 11 million users (Yes, I am one of them).
Facebook Making it Easier to Share Websites
So Facebook is making it easier to share your comments in news stories and things you like on other websites, with your friends. Quite obvious Facebook is using it’s 400 million customer base to challenge Google in this area.
Next Generation E Ink Preview
E Ink the display provider for the Kindle and Nook showed off their next generation display. It has nearly double the contrast rate and supports animation.
How the iPad is Changing the World
A few stories to share here. A TV station in Georgia is giving its anchors iPads in place of paper pads saving them $9600 a year. In Oregon a 99 year old woman with glaucoma is able to read again thanks to the iPad’s eReader. It is also her first computer ever. Finally Steven Sande of TUAW gives a 3 week review of the iPad and his experiences with it after 3 weeks of use.
The iPhone 4 Prototype Controversy
I’m not going to spend a lot of time on this story cause it has made the rounds enough over the past week. Needless to say, you probably shouldn’t drink a great German brew at a pub while in possession of the next iPhone because somethings you do stupid things when you drink...like leave said phone at the bar! Apparently Gizmodo bought the prototype from the person who found it for $5000 and now maybe in legal trouble over doing so. This story only gets better so stay tuned.

Tuesday Tech Talk #33
Hello folks and welcome to another edition of Triple T. Let’s see what is happening this week.
Google Buzz
Google unveiled their social networking feature called Buzz. Basically it works from within Gmail and pulls your contacts as users to add...and there in lies the problem of security concerns which forced them to quickly back pedal on features. My early reaction to it is this, uh this looks like FriendFeed! I mean this is hardly a Facebook killer and no one is going to abandon Facebook for Buzz. Clearly this is a beta network and far from ready for prime time. But I do like how I get alerts from within Gmail. Let’s see if they can get the bugs worked out.

Apple is said to be using FairPlay DRM on the eBooks for the iPad. Also it looks as if AT&T may carry the iPad WiFi+3G model in its stores. Also Unplggd has a story on cases for the iPad. Hat tip to Evan Agee for the link.
USB 3.0
The first USB 3.0 hub is hitting the market. More info about USB 3.0 can be found here. Yes the hub is backwards compatible to both USB 1.1 and 2.0.
iMac catches fire, still works
WOW! What a story here. The iMac was still functional after a fire.

Interesting article here, my friend Jeremy Holley mentioned this to me in passing when we were discussing stylus for an iPad.

DirecTV is taking Dish Network to court accusing them of false advertising in the wake of their “man on the street” interview ad. This ought to be good!

Ok it’s another Tuesday which means another edition of Triple T.
Apple Music Event
Tomorrow is the Apple music event, smart money points to iPod touch and nano’s with cameras. If your holding your breath for Beatles though then you might want to exhale before passing out. Also look for iTunes 9 with Blu-ray support.

If Microsoft were a human being they would probably need a therapist for their insecurity issues. I mean come on, you got what over 90% of the OS market and yet your worried about Mac and Linux? I mean yeah IMHO both are better than your OS but come on!

Ok so if your not using audioBoo yet and you own an iPhone or iPod touch, then you really need to. Basically it’s a short audio blog up to 5 minutes in length. You can find my feed here. Oh and you can add all your friends boo’s into your RSS reader or iTunes. It treats it as if it were a podcast.

A new segment as part of Triple T is This Week’s iPhone/iPod touch apps. Each week I will pick a few of my favorite apps I am trying. Here are this weeks.
AAA Roadside - This handy little app makes notifying AAA a whole lot easier. No need to talk to a person or dig out your card, just file it within the app. Upon first time setup you will enter your AAA card number and it will be stored within the app.
audioBoo - Couldn’t mention audioBoo above and not mention the actual app to do your recordings on. It also allows you to listen to recent boo’s from everyone else although as of now, there is no way to set it to just your family and friend’s boos.
Facebook - Facebook has updated their app with cool new features. You can now break down your news feeds by groups you set up like Family, Personal friends, and group names. Oh yeah and you can post photos right from the app (and video with an iPhone 3GS).
SiriusXM - If you subscribe to SiriusXM your iPhone or touch is now an instant radio (internet access required). I have found myself listening to different music and talk stations at Joe Joe’s and around the house.
TUAW - If your a Mac fan like me then you should have this app for The Unofficial Apple Weblog. All the latest news right in the app.

AAA Roadside - This handy little app makes notifying AAA a whole lot easier. No need to talk to a person or dig out your card, just file it within the app. Upon first time setup you will enter your AAA card number and it will be stored within the app.
audioBoo - Couldn’t mention audioBoo above and not mention the actual app to do your recordings on. It also allows you to listen to recent boo’s from everyone else although as of now, there is no way to set it to just your family and friend’s boos.
Facebook - Facebook has updated their app with cool new features. You can now break down your news feeds by groups you set up like Family, Personal friends, and group names. Oh yeah and you can post photos right from the app (and video with an iPhone 3GS).
SiriusXM - If you subscribe to SiriusXM your iPhone or touch is now an instant radio (internet access required). I have found myself listening to different music and talk stations at Joe Joe’s and around the house.
TUAW - If your a Mac fan like me then you should have this app for The Unofficial Apple Weblog. All the latest news right in the app.
