Tuesday Tech Talk #47

Hello folks and welcome to another edition of Triple T. Today is also Geek Pride Day, so thank your geeks with a hug or free beer and snacks (I like Sam Adams btw). Anyhow, lets get right down to it. iPhone 4 News and Roundup So as we move closer to the WWDC, we are starting to get more details of features in the next iPhone. One of the latest speculation is that we will FINALLY see tethering in the States! I’ll believe it when I see it frankly. From a cosmetic perspective we may have a choice between a black and white iPhone (see below). Finally, there may be the possibility of video conferencing. Address Book vs Google Sync Read an interesting article on The Unofficial Apple Weblog this week. It’s a discussion of how some people use Apple’s MobileMe syncing vs. Google Syncing. As someone that has tried both, I tend to use Google Sync, mostly because I use Gmail as my default email which means I’m pretty much interacting within the Google ecosystem anyway so it was just easier to use it as my default contacts. That being said I wish the Google Contacts had certain fields that the Apple Address book has such as First and Last name, Company, and separate fields in address for street and city, state, and zip. I’m more database oriented so that is just me being a Db snob. iPad availability remains constrained I still have not ordered mine yet, but the availability of the iPad is quite constrained with most Apple Store retail locations sold out of the 3G model and Best Buy being out completely. If you go to the Apple Store online you will see that the shipping time for both the WiFi and WiFi+3G models are 7-10 business days. Stay tuned! Apple ends “Get a Mac” ad campaign With the iPhone being the gateway gadget for users to buy Macs, Apple has ended the very popular “Get a Mac” campaign and focusing on a new website campaign of “Why You’ll Love a Mac”. This Week’s iPhone/iPod touch/iPad apps Seesmic (Free) - Announced this week is the iPhone version of Seesmic. For those that don’t know what Seesmic is, it is an application to view and write Twitter and Facebook updates. It is my application of choice on my MacBook for following Twitter feeds. The iPhone app doesn’t fail to disappoint. It gives you the option to view different screens such as search, twitter lists, trends, etc. It is well worth checking out and you can’t beat the price. HootSuite ($2.99) - Like Seesmic, HootSuite is another app for checking and writing to Twitter and Facebook. My good friend Jeremy Holley has written about this app before. A big feature of HootSuite is the ability to schedule a Twitter post. So if you want to say “Good Morning” at 5am even though you are actually sleeping, you can! Well that is going to do it for this edition of Tuesday Tech Talk. See you all next week!
